GROWING WILDLY
Group exhibition at Den Frie
16 January 2016 – 6 March 2016
The exhibition explores the book as a body and the body within the book, focusing on the tactile, psychological and intimate dimensions of printed matter.
It unfolds through three intersecting tracks. An archive of artists’ books forms the historical layer. An exhibition presents new works by eight contemporary artists. Alongside these, a printing office operated by Officin produces new publications during the course of the exhibition. Together these elements bring into dialogue the archival presence of artists’ books, contemporary artistic responses and the live process of bookmaking.
The invited artists include Lea Porsager, Ola Vasiljeva, Rolf Nowotny, Anni's & Mette Winckelmann, Absalon Kirkeby, Marianne Vierø and Jaanus Samma. Each artist was invited to create a spatial and sensory response to a selected book from the archive or to engage more broadly with the book as a medium.
The resulting works move between conceptual investigations and more psychological, intimate readings of the book, transforming printed matter into sculptural, spatial and performative forms. Each contribution is a newly produced work developed specifically for the exhibition.
